Seems like this was the wrong daemon... :-)

The log system in short:
There are several
- severities (Debug, Info, Error, Critical, ...)
- facilities (News, Mail, Local1, Local2, ...)
http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?syslog.conf+5
According to their levels (severities) and facilities, some syslogd decides
where to write those messages. Even /dev/null may be written to. So ask the
config file of your syslog daemon, please.
Before that, it may be worth taking some short look into leafnodes config and
get assured, that logging is enabled and it is enabled at the level you want to
log.
