I still use a 1.x version of LeafNode. So this might be bad advice. But this 
might be bad advise anyway, so here goes...


Why don't you update the relevant files in the 
directory /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/ of your Leadnode server?

From what I've seen, the access date/time indicate the last read date/time. 

I use that information to know what groups have been read last:
ls /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/ -lutrgG

So I guess the following could work:
touch -a /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/uk.comp.os.linux
