Well it wasn't, I'm quite sure about that.  I do wonder if it's
because leafnode/NNTP is the first (and only) entry I have in my
/etc/inetd.conf. 

I've looked at the leafnode.postinst file and it certainly *looks* as
if it should run update-inetd correctly.  In fact it must have run it
as otherwise I wouldn't have a leafnode entry in /etc/inetd.conf. 
I'll fish around a bit further and see if I can prevoke the problem again.
