I recently went through this exercise. Check these settings.
$ nslookup localhost
---<snip>---
Name: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1
$ grep nntp /etc/inetd.conf
nntp stream tcp nowait news /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/sbin/leafnode
$ grep 119 /etc/services
nntp 119/tcp usenet #Network News Transfer Protocol
nntp 119/udp usenet #Network News Transfer Protocol
$ telnet localhost 119
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 Leafnode NNTP Daemon, version 1.11.7 running at localhost (my fqdn: xxxxxx.xxx)
quit
205 Always happy to serve!
Connection closed by foreign host.
$ env |grep NNTP
NNTPSERVER=localhost
If all this looks good then you should have success with "tin -r".
Enjoy,
Jack Myers
