What's in the logs around the time you try to connect? Check  
/var/log/syslog - there should be some leafnode logging.

What do you get when you run leafnode from commandline, as in

	sudo /usr/local/sbin/leafnode

(it drops privileges right away, so that's reasonably safe)

What's the xinetd entry for leafnode?
