There should be no guessing - the repo has current info/* stuff (and
runs post-update hook to keep the 'server info for stupid protocols' up
to date).

Well, root can access everything, and AFAICT from IEEE Std 1003.1, 2004
Edition, access() may return ok for the superuser... but why would the
superuser want to use Git?
