There isn't much you can do about the null components (or group names
ending in a dot), anarchy (as in alt.*) can have these side effects -
perhaps it's an upstream malfunction, I don't know.

Regarding the refetches, this is probably your problem:

Try listing "nodesc = 1" below your "server = news.eclipse.co.uk" line
and see if that helps.
