Yes, design reason - code is *MUST* easier that way.

The former is definitely true, or at least long-winded work (and the
local drive may become the bottleneck on slower drives with faster links
anyways), whether it's frowned upon depends on (a) whom you're asking,
(b) how many simultaneous connections to the same server you're talking
about.
