Solved!

Well, not really, read on...
I just deleted everything in /usr/local/sbin and installed leafnode-1
using the Ubuntu package.

There seems to be an nntp service running on port 119, according to
nmap:

nmap 127.0.0.1 -p 119

Starting Nmap 4.03 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2006-07-24 21:38
CEST
Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
PORT    STATE SERVICE
119/tcp open  nntp

fetchnews seems to fill up /var/spool/news (wiped it first):

amedee at saruman:~$ ls -al /var/spool/news/

But when I use a news client (Thunderbird, Pan) they will not show the
list of newsgroups.
What happen??? Someone set up us the bomb?
