Right.  Assuming you are using GNU cp, your suggested procedure should
be safe as "-a" preserves permissions and hard links. (For those on
non-GNU systems, -x prevents cp from descending into other file systems.)

BTW, please do not recycle threads, but start new ones on a new topic,
to keep things concise for the reader. Perhaps it makes no difference in
PINE, it does makes a difference in threaded readers such as mutt,
Sylpheed, Evolution or Thunderbird.
