I've cleaned it up, changed the active file format to include a line
with a count (so one pass through the file suffices when that line is
present), simplified getabufferedline a bit and committed it to CVS.

I don't know how long the mmap changes will live though - we'll see how
many portability complaints come in after the next snapshot.
