cp -a would do the job if cp was the GNU version of the command.
rsync -a is fine.
cpio in copy-pass-mode should be fine
two tar commands in a pipe should be fine
dump/restore should be fine.

No, it isn't normal as long as the spool resides in a file system with
POSIX semantics (i. e. ext2fs, ext3fs, ufs, xfs, jfs, ffs, lfs,
reiserfs), your expectation is what leafnode should provide.

I'll try to reproduce the problem in a test area on my computer and then
see if I can find and uproot the gnomes who play this kind of jokes.
