OK, I know that command line works for you, but I'm not sure how you run
fetchnews otherwise? From /etc/ppp/ip-up or rather from a crontab?

I have seen temporary DNS errors on some occasions when too much is
started from ip-up at the same time that stuffs the network link so that
the DNS queries time out.

Can you give more details on how you start fetchnews?
