I don't dispute there may be a problem, and it may even be unrelated to
NTL. I do need a hint however where to look, the posting stuff is more
than just a dozen of lines.

Can you please try to get a debug log that shows the request
leafnode/fetchnews has made and the server's response, in context?

You need to configure syslog.conf so it captures news.debug into a file,
create that file (touch /var/log/myfile), send syslogd a SIGHUP. Then,
set debugmode in /etc/leafnode/config and run fetchnews in a way that
triggers this problem (use de.test or some other testing group, in
de.test you can use subject and first line with "test no reply" so you
don't get a dozen echos mailed back) and please mail me the debug log
off-list.
